Fee Explanation

Uniform Information

All band students need to own an NHS Band T-Shirt, white cotton/nylon gloves (two pairs), black socks, and all-black, laced, marching shoes. Percussion and Color Guard don not need to purchase the gloves. All checks need to be turned in at the Music Eligibility Night, Wednesday August 18th, between 6 and 8 pm in the commons, or paid on-line prior to Eligibility Night.

The school will issue your marching band uniform, including pants, coat, helmet, plume and raincoat. There will be a $50 maintenance fee assessed for your marching band uniform. The full marching band uniform will be required for all Newport Pride Marching Band performances, and, minus the white gloves and helmet, some concert band performances.

We ask all new band students to purchase a T-Shirt at a cost of $15. (Returning members do not need to buy a new T-shirt, but are suggested to do so) We have a half-uniform policy for all marching band performances and home football games; meaning that all students will arrive for competitions, parades, performances and home football games in the uniform T-Shirt. T-Shirts come in XS (Youth 16) , S, M, L, XL and XXL. (Please order the T-Shirts to fit, not to hang down to your knees!)

There will be a selection of the school approved marching shoes at our summer band rehearsals for sizing. The shoes come in half sizes and in medium and wide widths. Marching shoes cost $39. We have some slightly used marching shoes available for students in need of financial assistance.

Gloves are sized as well, and we will have many on hand throughout the year. Gloves cost $3 per pair. (Reminder: All returning members need 2 pairs of white/new gloves) Drumline and Color Guard do not need gloves.

Parents may supply their students black socks, or they may be purchased for $5 per pair. Students must wear all black, calf length socks every time we are in uniform. No color other than black, and no footies.

Fundraising Donation

Rather than hit parents continuously for fundraising, the NBPA is requesting that all parents provide a one-time donation to the band. As such this donation is tax deductable. Typically, the NBPA retains only 15-30% of the amount paid for fund raising items. The NBPA will continue to sell a limited number of items for spirit purposes.

The funds raised by the NBPA are used to support:
  • Band Trips - Money raised by the NBPA lowers the cost students need to pay for trips, provide for chaperones, and cover other expenses.
  • Band Uniforms - While uniform fees cover cleaning and repairs, the uniforms need to be periodically replaced.
  • Additional Instruction - This catagory includes Aides for marching, sectionals for Jazz Bands, and access to other instructional help.
  • Instruments - The NBPA helps provide instruments for band members to play.
  • Education and Training - The NBPA supports training and educational opportunities for the band directors.
  • Other Support - The NBPA provides other support including maintaining the band trailer, band picnics, recordings and other items.

Instruments

Students who need to check out school instruments for marching and concert band may do so at our first rehearsal. According to B. S. D. policy, students who wish to check out a school instrument for the new school year will need to pay a $50.00 maintenance fee. You must pay this fee before we will check you out an instrument! Checks must be made out to NHS Music and brought to the first rehearsal.

If you play a concert instrument that is not used for marching band, such as oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet or baritone saxophone, and you own another instrument suitable for marching band, please bring it to your first rehearsal. If you would like to switch to another instrument for marching band, please don't hesitate to inquire about this possibility. You should contact Mr. Eisenhauer soon to check on availability of the instrument of your choice.

Students who only need an instrument for marching band and currently own or rent their concert band instrument may do so with no fee.
