8th Grade/New Member NHS Band Registration FAQ's
High School Band class you will take:
- All incoming 9th grade wind musicians (Flute, Clarinet, Baritone, Trombone etc.) sign up for Concert Band.
- All incoming 9th grade percussion students sign up for Percussion Ensemble.
- All high school band classes (9th grade Concert Band, 10th grade Symphonic
Band, 11th & 12th grade Wind Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble) combine to
form our marching band.
- Every student in our band program participates in marching band for the
first quarter of our school year.
Uniform Info and Costs:
- All students will need to buy/own:
- NHS Band T-Shirt ($15)
- 2 pr. white cotton gloves ($3 ea.)
- Black socks
- All-black, laced, marching shoes ($39)
- The school will issue the remaining parts of your uniform including,
pants, coat, helmet, plume and raincoat.

There will be a $50 cleaning and maintenance fee assessed for your marching
band uniform, payment due at the time of issue.
- All uniform checks will be made out to our Newport Band Parents Association.
School Fees:
- Remember also, as per school policy, all students involved in sports or activities (like band) must purchase a school ASB card ($45), and pay an ASB Transportation Fee (Approx. $75).
Instrument Info and Rental Costs:
- If you play a concert instrument that is not used for marching band, such as oboe, bassoon, alto/bass clarinet or baritone saxophone, and you own another instrument suitable for marching band, please bring it to your first rehearsal. If you would like to switch to another instrument for marching band, please don't hesitate to inquire about this possibility.
- Students who need to check out school instruments for concert, jazz or marching band may do so at their first rehearsal. According to B. S. D. policy, students who wish to check out a school instrument for the new school year will need to pay a $50.00 maintenance fee. Make Checks payable to NHS Band ASB.
- All percussionists pay $35.00 maintenance fee. Checks payable to NHS Band ASB.
- Students who only need an instrument for marching band AND currently own or rent their concert band instrument may check out a marching instrument with no fee.
Financial Assistance:
- Families who qualify for financial need may apply for assistance to cover the above costs and fees. Money will never prohibit any student form participating to the fullest extent in our band program.
Jazz Ensemble I, II and III:
- Tryouts for Jazz Ensemble I, II and III will be held during the first two weeks
of school.
- Any student wishing to continue or begin the study of jazz may try-out
for these ensembles.
- All three bands meet at 6:30 AM every day during Zero Hour.
- All three bands travel and have additional fees.
Other Clubs and Sports:
(Q: Can I be in Marching Band and play a sport? A: Absolutely!)
- Participation in Band (including Marching Band) does not prohibit full
participation in any club and/or sport. We work very hard to coordinate
rehearsals and games.
Color Guard:
- If you have dance or gymnastic training, or would enjoy receiving professional instruction in movement and dance, perhaps Color Guard is for you.
- If you have questions about this year's Color Guard, please call our

Marching Band Calendar - Performance - Rehearsal Schedule:
- We will begin summer band rehearsals two weeks before the start of
school. Please refer to the schedule below. All band students that are in
town during the weeks of these rehearsals are expected to attend.
- We will have Full Band Rehearsals every Wednesday night, from 6 to 9 PM,
starting Wednesday, September 2nd, until October 7th. After October 7th we'll
only practice on the Wednesday nights that directly precede a Friday night home
football game. (possibly only two additional evenings, determined when we
receive the 2009 varsity football schedule)
- We will all participate in a Full Band Retreat, Saturday, Sunday and
Monday, September 12 - 14, at Cispus Learning Center, in Randle, WA.
The school will provide transportation and cost will be $150.00 per person.
Checks payable to NHS Band Trip ASB.
- We perform at every home football game. Usually 4 games, on Friday nights.
- We will compete in two “away” Marching Band Competitions that
will most likely be held on Saturday October 3rd and 10th.
